Not the most relaxing picnic

I spotted the following item in the Taipei Times Quick Take section earlier.

Barbecue at crematorium

The Taoyuan County Funeral Service Industry Association said that anyone interested in a free barbecue on Mid-Autumn Festival should head for the funeral home in Jhongli (中壢). Last year, the association organized a barbecue for more than 1,000 people at the funeral home, while all six cremation furnaces were working. Because of the smell emanating from the furnaces, very few people, aside from employees and their families, took part in the activity. This year, the furnaces will be closed in the afternoon during the barbecue, the association said. The barbecue will take place between 4pm and 10pm on Friday.

Needless to say, this is often the most entertaining section of the paper.

  1. That is absolutely fantastic. I would LOVE to go to a barbeque at a crematorium – and even better would be inviting people to one.

Reminds me a bit of the “waste disposal facility and municipal swimming pool” I saw advertised in a brochure for the city in Japan I used to live in (in that case they used the heat to warm the pools).

  2. Reminds me about my dad’s funeral about two years ago.We burned his coffin in the crematorium, but it takes more than an hour,so while waiting,we(about 40 member of my kins)had dined in the nice Japanese style restaurant inside of crematorium. We ate good monk-styled vegetarian dishes with disposable chopsticks. Then we went back to see how things were done with my oldman’s body.Everything was turned into ashes but some few white bones left over.So picked up his bones and tossed them with disposable chopsticks.(That’s why this “Hashi-watashi”is considered as bad table manner).Lastly,I picked up my oldman’s bone of Adam’s apple(My father had a huge one)and placed in the tiny box.

  3. Aceface : sorry ’bout your old man, dude. Had the same experience last year. Funny how similar my culture is to the Japs’. Last place I’d fancy havin’ BBQ though.
