Oh, man, you gotta check out (in modernized English, mind you) that Book of Margery of Kempe. She obsesses about having enjoyed conjugal relations with her husband too much, convinces her husband (with some difficulty) never to sleep with her again because, as she claims, Jesus wants it that way (if I remember right, at one point, she says the equivalent of “He’s here right now and watching you,” which would freak out any Medieval man, I think) and then she marries God (not just the father, but the whole Trinity) in an ecstatic vision had in a cathedral while on pilgrimage… in Rome, I think the wedding was.
And the weirdest thing is that there are scholars who say this kind of thing shows up in other texts, as in, this is not all that unusual for the Middle Ages. (Others, of course, come right out and say she was bananas.)
