!Okay, now you’re not even making sense. Either that, or you’re just taking the piss. Who is ‘they’, what is a ‘lot’ "

"They" means both African Americans in the ghetto and Whites in suburbia.

"Lot"means neighborhood.

"do you really think that the problem of income gaps has to be solved or attacked or whatever before issues involving race relations are continued?"

Never said that. However,I believe solving the problem of income gaps would have very positive effect to the race relation. While talking about race relation usually ends up very emotional argument and polarize politics and ends up not achieving much.

1 in 50 African Americans is HIV positive (due in no small part to class-related issues - education, family stability, and drug abuse)and yet the Obama era has seen massive (state level) cuts to community outreach programs. Shouldn't the dialogue also be about action?

Awesome find, thanks for sharing. I have a friend who used to work for columbia music and he told me that most of the folks that make it big are not really there because of their talent. Like any other country, its all about how well you play the game and if your inner shark is strong enough.

Returning to things not monopolized in Japan, it is not the only country where men marry pillows.

Wait, what *about* bluefin tuna? I mean, most of it comes from the waters off New England, but Japan still makes bluefin tuna into a global economy, no?

"would wager there were far fewer offenses per capita on either JR or any of the private rail companies in Japan"

Are you basing that assumption on the number of actual incidents, or the number of *reported* incidents?

What about North Sea cod? Cod's been endangered for the last decade, and is in far more danger from overfishing than whales around Japan are. But cod aren't photogenic, so unlike seals and whales, the WWF or IFAW can't use them for fundraisng drives, and unlike dolphins they make shitty subjects for documentaries. Couldn't agree more with the comment, David.

Can I add chikan to the list? There were 909 sexual and/or violent assaults on the London underground in 2008-9, but we don't find that out of the ordinary enough to have public awareness campaigns or women-only carriages. I would wager there were far fewer offenses per capita on either JR or any of the private rail companies in Japan, and yet their management still feels the need to take measures to protect their passengers.

>>I think what has changed is the broader acceptance of more obvious differences – e.g. I married a Cambodian woman and my family has no problem with that, but my grandparents would never have tolerated either of my parents doing something like that (and my wife’s grandparents probably wouldn’t tolerate it either).

That marriage would have been illegal in the USA in your grandparents' time. Anti-miscegenation laws existed in most states until the late 1940s or after.
