There were actually some recent updates to the nationality law, but those were to correct errors that made it difficult or impossible for some children of unmarried mixed Japanese and foreign couples to be properly recognized as Japanese citizens. More of a bug fix than a new feature, so to speak.</description>

There has not been any progress on the issue since.  Taro Kono was eviscerated on his blog comments for taking up the issue (thanks 2ch!) and he has moved away from championing the issue, which he only did at the behest of some MOJ bureaucrats, who are now disenfranchised by the new DPJ regime.</description>
