Thanks for the update Curzon.

There were actually some recent updates to the nationality law, but those were to correct errors that made it difficult or impossible for some children of unmarried mixed Japanese and foreign couples to be properly recognized as Japanese citizens. More of a bug fix than a new feature, so to speak.

The article gets some basic facts wrong, as is typical of a Jt article… :sigh: I’d fisk it in full but I am commenting from my phone.

There has not been any progress on the issue since. Taro Kono was eviscerated on his blog comments for taking up the issue (thanks 2ch!) and he has moved away from championing the issue, which he only did at the behest of some MOJ bureaucrats, who are now disenfranchised by the new DPJ regime.

I haven’t heard anything about it since, and I’ve never heard the DPJ talk about it, but I’d love for someone to correct me if there’s been any movement on this issue.

Obviously it won’t have been a high political priority in an election year (especially an election year like this one)...
