Pick a caption: Kissinger at Kinkakuji

(From Sankei online)

Doctor Henry Kissinger, April 21, 2009, 11:07 AM at Kinkakuji (The Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto.

Any suggestions for an appropriate caption?

(While we’re talking about him, here’s a post I made about him in 2005, very likely one of the earliest posts of substance on this blog.)

  1. Kissinger picked the most vanilla and innocent historical landmark possible. He should go visit the Khmer Rouge prisons in Cambodia to see what he paved the way for!

  2. “Zat over zeya, zat is ze one part of the world I never had a chance to take a schitt on.”

  3. You’ve all missed the obvious one!

“Apparently somebody was able to burn this place before I could get to it.”

  4. “Ah-ha! I think I’ve got it. Mishima was gay. Mishima wrote about Kinkakuji. I am at Kinkakuji, and I am by the water. Now I know why you are all calling me a gay fish!”

  5. :sniff:

The man is a genius. To think his genius is being besmirtched in this comment section, it brings tears to my eyes. Bless you, Henry.

  6. You know, it’s very, very possible to be both a genius and a complete dickhead. In fact, there’s a rather high correlation between the two…

  7. He could be also saying “Now China over there… they’ve had 4000 years of uninterrupted government and have never done anything aggressive in their 7000 years of history!”

or to use another one of the “related posts” –

“Do they have canned wine in that vending machine over there?”

  8. I’ve got it. He’s saying –

“Wait… isn’t that guy over there that famous anti-Chinese Japanese rightwinger Jackie Chan?”

  9. “I’m giving you an offer you can’t refuse”.
    Or
    “That was a rocket,not a missile.Got it?”.

  10. Thinking about Kissinger,a genius theory.

    Is he really?
I’ve always thought of the Kissinger fame as the equivalent of the would-be-status of what Paul Allen in alternative universe where Allen and Bill Gates had founded MICROSOFT in China and Gates had to stuck with politburo beyond the bamboo curtain sit right next by Mao.

  11. I was born in Germany in 1969 and spent my childhood there during the 70ties. Kissinger was hugely popular there during the 70ties. I remember singing a chant dedicated to Kissinger and dancing in the streets with other kids when he got the Nobel Prize.

I guess the germans at that time recognized him more a “German” than as a American.

  12. Wow not everyone gets to shake hands with the PM when they visit the country.

Note to tourism promoters: Maybe you could start offering audiences with Aso as an attraction?

  13. “You know, it’s very, very possible to be both a genius and a complete dickhead. In fact, there’s a rather high correlation between the two…”

    I’ll drink to that!

    Cf. John Maynard Keynes

  14. Bryce’s second photo troubles me. I want to come up with a caption that doesn’t involve farting, but the temptation to have the Ish pop one is too great.

  15. For the original picture:

“I’m in the mood to burn me some commies. Is Ritsumeikan that way?”

  16. Kissinger will be so sad when he finds out he’s 30 years late to find any commies at Ritsumeikan.

  17. “Anything can become excusable when seen from the standpoint of the result.”

    – Yukio Mishima

  18. And that’s something neither Mishima nor Kissinger have achieved. Result. They were both good at media manipulation and that’s about it.

  19. “They were both good at media manipulation and that’s about it.”

Mishima was also very good at one-armed push-ups.

  20. “Kissinger will be so sad when he finds out he’s 30 years late to find any commies at Ritsumeikan.”

Yeah, they’re all at Kyodai now in the Yoshida and Kumano dorms. A single match would be more than enough to burn both places down.

  21. I don’t think he is bothered much about tenured liberals, since he too was one of the members of the Harvard establishment before he joined the white house.
