Sorry, I also meant to point out that though the IKEa project doesn't displace people, the way the destruction of the place you're speaking about does (it;'s an active palce where people congragate and it has taken on a vibrance and life), there are plenty of projects in the world that destroy whole neighborhoods, displace people where they live, not just where they socialize.(Beijing for example - in prep for the olympics destroyed one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city).

So development always comes with a price - either by removing a place where people have mental and physical sanctuary, the place where they are rooted or in some cases the architecture that defines a sense of place.

I would think in Japan this is common too, since space is such a premium.

Isn't progress great.

Cousin Roy - great article. Closer to home this is a topic of much discussion. Inorder ot build IKEA in Brooklyn they demolished 10 civil war era buildings. Modernization always brings with it a destruction of the past - even when you have a sociaty (supposedly ours) that values historical locations, noone was volleying for those buildings to be landmarked (over 200 years old and gone in a day!).

I'd say more, and I may do so :-).
