There are a couple of "big man's" shops around Osaka which make clothes that fit the foreigner. Trouble is, they are expensive and there is limited range in terms of style. When all else fails there is the Internet.

Must be that metabolic syndrome.... I know well one Japanese man who is nearly my height, and he's certainly a beanpole. I've seen him in onsen: no excess there at all.

Buying shirts in Japan is something I gave up on long ago. If the collar fits, the sleeves are too short. Or vice-versa. So I stocked up on a recent trip to NA, where I could find tons of my size. Order-made clothing? Isn't that a little pricey? Probably moot anyway as I am not in Tokyo or even Osaka/Nagoya....

Actually, I am a beanpole of nearly six feet, and I have a terribly hard time buying clothes in Japan, particularly dress shirts. 15.5 / 35 is quite easy to find in the US; 40 / 87, the metric equivalent, is damnear impossible to find in Japan. It isn't hard to find an off-the-rack shirt with 87 cm sleeves, but it will always have a collar of at least 45 cm. Quite frustrating (although it isn't a fatal problem since order-made clothing is easy to get in Tokyo).

Anyway, the few really tall Japanese people I know are also carrying a considerable deal of muscle/flab on their bodies. Must be diet.

The BMI calculator at Aichi Pref reckons I should be 75kg. Insane. I think that *might* be because most Japanese who top six feet tend to be the beanpole type, which I am not. The bean type, perhaps....

65kg at that height rates as "underweight - may result in health problems" on the BMI and seems impossible if one has any muscle at all. "Normal" goes up to about 85kg for 180cm so I think that it is dangerous to pass off 65kg as some kind of ideal.

Ace: I definitely care about what I weigh, and am well aware I should be thinner, but getting down to the 70s that I "should" be for my height (185cm) according to Japan[ese women] would be insane. The 80s would be nice, though. At the moment, however, double digits would be a breakthrough.... Actually I just weighed myself for the first time in ages, and am double digits. Woo-hoo. But I go more by how well I can fit my jeans. And the BMI is nonsense - Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime would have been seen as "obese."

OK,this is one moment I see a cultural gap between me and you guys.
See,I DO care about weight(about 75kg)and think before I eat....
Health care may costs your company, but it costs more to your life.

Great post. I'm tired of Japanese women telling me that a full grown man of 180 cm should ideally weigh about 65kg.
