You know it's more the fact that they helped in the cause and of their support than if they actually did anything in Iraq. They did help in my opinion as Darin wrote with humanitarian efforts. Sometimes that is enough in war.

Hey, this is Iraq we're talking about . . . The GSDF people could come back and say "at least we didn't torture any prisoners" and it would be a grand success. Relatively speaking.

first, i agree that they did not accomplished anything.

but it is not really the japanese' fault that they did not accomplish anything. the results was determined by the set-up before they ever set foot on the soil of iraq.

otoh, the yankees and the brits did accomplished one thing, toppled saddam. other than that......hmmmm

And what right do they have to give themselves credit for cursory jobs that could have easily been covered by Americans?

Yes, the Americans could have done everything that the Japanese 'humanitarian' mission did, but the American didn't do it, the Japanese did. What that means is hands that would have been tied up are free to do other (more important?) things instead. I think saying they didn't accomplish anything is going a bit too far. Perhaps saying they didn't do as much to warrant the attention that they are being given is more appropriate, but at the same time, are we to expect the Japanese media wouldn't be full of news about the troops returning home? It's a nice break from the sick mom from Aichi pushing her kid off the bridge.
