Suzuki Ami won her legal suit against AG Communications, and she got what in return? A total blacklisting from the industry for 4 years. The law can't hold a candle to 仁義.

Good point, Marxy. One lawyer I know says "I want to start an entertainment law practice, but given that the yakuza control everything, there isn't really a whole lot of law to practice..."

I looked up the Japanese Broadcast Law once and it does specifically say that you can't have advertisements that are not marked as advertisements. I don't think print media has the same legal restraints - even in the U.S. The New Yorker etc. just finds it more in their interest not to do break from the ethical norms. Also the Broadcast Law is 80% about NHK, so the private stations seem to be held to a lower ethical and legal requirement about programming.

Another interesting tidbit about TV: the yakuza-controlled production companies are the ones most responsible for the pay-to-play you see on Oosama no Buranchi etc. Networks are outsourcing most of their content anyway. Dentsu invents whole TV shows to match their clients' favor.

Marxy and Curzon: I fight for JUSTICE.

Scott: Hm, well I think the whole point of them being journalistic *ethics* is that they aren't necessarily legally enforced but act more like moral standards. According to Wikipedia, the media create their own standards of advertising, though some types of ads (political campaigns, medical products) are regulated by the government.

I'd say to complain you could either call the Yomiuri itself or the NSK. If you're stern enough you might get an apology out of the Yomiuri.

Is the NSK self-regulating with regard to complaints about this sort of stuff or is there a government body?
