Goro Miyazaki’s Journal: 1/20/06: I saw Mamoru Oshii’s Latest Movie

I have been busy, but apparently Goro-san has been writing a LOT. So I am only going to go after the parts where he talks about the relationship between him and his father. Here we go:

Yesterday I saw a pre-screening of Mamoru Oshii’s latest, “Biographical Vignettes of Dr. Tachigui” at the Ghibli screening room. But before I give my thoughts on that, I’ll tell you an anecdote.

20 years ago, when I was still a high school student, I met Director Mamoru Oshii.
The place was at my grandfather’s cottage in Shinshu (more of a mountain shack than a cottage).
The time was the middle of summer, I remember.
At the time, Oshii-san, in his mid-30s, was the very picture of a rosy-cheeked beautiful (?) youth, and his white running shirt made an impression on me.

While we were at the cottage, Oshii-san and my father would argue for hours on end over their theories of animation.

The previous year or so, Director Hayao Miyazaki’s “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” and Director Mamoru Oshii’s “Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer” were released.
At the time, I preferred Urusei Yatsura 2, and learned later that my opinion had been communicated to Oshii-san.

Anyway, back to what I was talking about.

Maybe because he remembers that, Oshii-san apparently has a unilateral fondness for me, and really wanted me to see “Biographical Vignettes of Dr. Tachigui.”

I wish all the success in the world for Oshii-san.

So my thoughts, briefly:
Once more, on the same theme, I’d like you to make an effort toward entertainment that puts service first.
That is all.

  1. what future projects for the studio will you be working on i belive i have seen a preview(pictures) of the upcoming film i wish all the luck on that any other films planed ahead? and do you think their will ever be a sequal to princess mononoke it would be an amazing idea for the film which left so much untold by the end of it if time and effort is taken on it am sure it would come out simply amazing just a thought i hope to see more films in the future take care..

  2. Bane: I’m glad you’re such a fan of my work. I’m not sure what preview you may or may not have seen, but rest assured the animated adaptation of Napoleon Dynamite is sure to be an unadulterated success.

OK, sequel to Princess Mononoke: the princess marries the spider monster from the beginning of the film as punishment for being raised by wolves without a license. Unable to suck the blood of a vaguely formless blob, she is left powerless to stop his philandering ways. It is only after she discovers sexual liberation among the ever-randy tree elves that she can find some escape. Environmental apocalypse once again rears its ugly head but Mononoke is too busy servicing 20 elves at once to do anything about it. World ends, action figures available at jlist.com. The End!

  3. it would be a nice idea not only a nice idea but a challenge to make a sequel would you say that is something impossible to do? it can be done of course it might not be as well as a success as the first Mononoke film although it would be right beside it theirs many questions
That raise throughout the film that are never answered i would give some examples of many things left without answered though i don’t want to make this post so long although i will if you want in the next one also and the way the film ended just seems as if it should get more as some would say or a sequel and by preview of the new film I meant pictures nothing more I hope to see many more great films in the future.

  4. here are some questions as well as examples of things left out in the film that in my personal opinion would make great for a sequal.one thing we as the viewers do not see is the parents of San nor their true identities are they even alive for that matter? who are they are they important people or simply normal living human beings

people would San ever truly find out she is indeed human not a wolf? and as we all know Moro died though who is the father of the pups? is he not as well a guardian of the forest is the Shishigami(forest spirit) truly dead? if so would their not be yet another God arise to rule the forest leading to my next question would he be an evil God or good and

not cause Demise and as we all know just by simply driving Lord Asano’s men away will not solve the problem would he not sent them once more if the forest God is truly dead am sure he would take this to his Advantage and if he was who would stop him would their nearly be Chaos no one would stop him this leads to my Conclusion of my final questions where and how will they rebuild the ironworks will Ashitaka

not return to his people the curse is truly gone would that not give him a right to return and if so how would he see San their so called “Relationship” would just nearly die by the end of this am sure you must be amazed of how many things i have listed with all these Elements a film would and could be able to be made of the entire decision is on the hands of Goro Myizaki..

Also I am honored that you belive i have truly posted the best comments on this site hope to hear soon from you.
