[...] There is no word yet on how bioluminescence will affect the God Pig industry. According to a report last year in the Taipei Times “some farmers even pour metal into their pigs before a contest in order to increase the swine’s weight.” All said, we seen to be well on the way to one-ton partially metallic bioluminescent god pigs. All it takes it one minor lab accident and we’re in the middle of a 1950’s horror movie. [...]

I asked a couple of Taiwanese people, and at least one of them seemed to think that the custom could have predated the Chinese immigration. I have some stuff on Taiwanese religion, but it's mostly in Japanese so it may be a while before I find more info on this.

The Malayo-Polynesian Highland tribes of Indochina also practice animal sacrifice. And while they preferred water buffalo, pigs were the most common. I wonder if Taiwan's custom owes anything to its Aboriginals as well as to the Hakka and Han Chinese communities. My suspicion is that pig sacrifices predate the arrival of Hakka pioneers by at least several centuries, if not millenia.
