Spam I get in Japanese

UPDATE: Due to popular demand, here’s the English translation.

I get a lot of spam in Japanese these days. Here’s one example:

You e-mailed me, didn’t you? I thought it might be spam, but since it’s not a weird address I decided to reply. Did we chat somewhere before?

And that’s it. Not trying to sell anything. I’m scared.

  1. It’s pretty antisocial to post this only in Japanese. Whatever happen to Adamu’s Japponica, translating this into English?

  2. Here’s an amusing and kind of cute piece of Japanese spam I got, despite not living in Japan. I don’t know this girl at all, in fact I’ve never been to Japan, though I’ve studied the language a bit:

    Subject: ★

  3. ↑Translation of above: Subject: How are you?
Long time no see! Do you remember me? I’m Miyuki, the girl you used to see on the train. Have you forgotten? (crying face) Of course, it has been a few months…. Sorry to contact you so suddenly. Do you have a girlfriend now? I am free at the moment (another crying face). My boyfriend had a girl on the side so we broke up! I decided to e-mail you for old time’s sake (star). Please respond, OK? I’ve attached a recent picture of me. Seeya!

Creepy stuff. I’m gonna reply to the one I posted and see what response I get.

I can tell you what response you’ll get: more spam!

When you reply you’ll be added to their list of email addresses confirmed to be actively used, and that list will then be sold to other spammers, who will send you more spam, most of it probably for the same purpose!

It’s been ages since I recived any spam actually trying to sell me anything! They’re all just trying to get a response. I wonder how these guys are actually making any money… surely just selling lists of emails to each other isn’t sustainable!? 🙂

Well, there are all the scam spams I suppose, I guess enough stupid people fall for those to make it worthwhile for someone somewhere.

Anyway… cool blog, I just found it via boingboing.net

  5. Hey Tim: GOOD CALL!! I’m glad I didn’t reply. It hadn’t even occurred to me that that was what they wanted. I guess sometimes this blog CAN be educational.

Actually, now that you mention it, I have been receiving spam in English with similar subjects. I was smart enough to know they were spam in English, but for some reason the fact that it was in Japanese threw me off. Doh!
